Liability for Personal Property Brought into Jamiatul Ummah School
In line with the school’s internal procedures and relevant legal requirements, this statement outlines the school’s position regarding personal belongings brought onto the school premises by pupils, parents, staff, or visitors.
Personal Property
Parents and pupils are reminded that any personal belongings — including, but not limited to, mobile phones, bicycles, jewellery, cash, or other valuable items — brought onto the school site are done so entirely at the owner’s own risk.
Jamiatul Ummah School cannot accept responsibility or liability for any loss, theft, or damage to personal property under any circumstances.
Guidance and Preventive Measures
- Pupils are strongly advised not to bring valuable items to school unless absolutely necessary.
- Where bringing such items cannot be avoided, pupils should take appropriate precautions to keep them safe — for instance, locking bicycles securely in designated areas and keeping mobile phones or money on their person at all times.
- The school provides a limited number of lockers for pupil use; however, the safety of items placed in lockers remains the responsibility of the individual.
- The school does not provide insurance for personal belongings.
Confiscation Procedures
In circumstances where personal items are confiscated by staff as part of a disciplinary or safeguarding measure, the school’s duty is limited to ensuring that the confiscation is conducted lawfully and that reasonable care is taken to safeguard the item until it is returned.
Liability and Legal Reference
It is important for all pupils and parents to understand that the school bears no liability for personal items that are lost, stolen, or damaged on school premises — unless the item was lawfully confiscated under the provisions of Section 94 of the Education and Inspections Act 2006.
In such cases, the school’s responsibility is strictly limited to the conditions set out by the Act.
Communication and Awareness
The school will continue to remind parents and pupils, through notices, correspondence, and the school website, about the importance of safeguarding personal property and the risks of bringing valuables onto the school site.
By bringing personal belongings to school, parents and pupils acknowledge and accept this policy and the associated terms.
